Lap-band weight loss surgery uses an adjustable silicone band to create a small stomach pouch out of the upper portion of the stomach; with a small opening into the larger area of the stomach. This allows the patient to feel full after eating only a small amount of food, and stay full for a relatively long time despite that smaller portion.
