Nick Jonas to Help Fight Obesity

Nick Jonas is joining first lady Michelle Obama in the battle against obesity, Disney recently announced.

Actor, musician and teen heartthrob Nick Jonas is joining the anti-obesity campaign, according to Disney, with hopes that his celebrity status will help fans make healthy choices.

The initiative, called “Magic of Healthy Living,” will also launch two websites geared toward kids that offer ideas on exercise activities and healthy habits they can make a part of their everyday lives. The PSAs will also feature Disney starlet Brenda Song.

As part of the crusade, Disney will provide a one million dollar grant to help build play spaces and gardens in ten underserved communities across the nation.

The Disney campaign aligns seamlessly with the “Let’s Move” initiative launched by first lady Michelle Obama earlier this year to help fight the obesity epidemic among children and teens in the U.S.

“I am thrilled to join ‘Disney’s Magic of Healthy Living’ effort and support the work these young people are doing to reach out to their peers and communicate this powerful message,” the first lady said.

About one in five American children between ages 6 and 19 are considered obese, which means they have a body mass index (BMI) greater than 30.

The childhood obesity surge in the U.S. has been blamed on a poor diet consisting of sugary drinks and processed foods at home and in schools, as well as kids spending too much time playing video games and watching TV.
