Nearly Half of Weight Loss Program Participants Drop Out

A recent Canadian study showed that 43 percent of people involved in a weight loss program dropped out before they reached their goal. The drop-out rate was significantly lower for participants who had bariatric surgery, while more than half of those who did not have the surgery quit before achieving their target weight.

Researchers from the Department of Surgery at the University of Alberta and the Centre for the Advancement of Minimally Invasive Surgery at the Royal Alexandria Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta, tracked data over six years for 1,205 patients in a government-funded weight-management clinic, of which 318 had undergone bariatric surgery. Within the program, participants would receive general health advice as well as a regimented diet and workout schedule.

The drop-out rate among those with bariatric surgery was 12 percent, and for those who had not undergone the surgery it was 54 percent.

“We speculate that patients willing to undergo the initial bariatric surgical procedure may be more committed to complete the program,” the study authors wrote.

In an interview with MyHealthNewsDaily, Dr. Jim Early, a professor at the University of Kansas Medical School in Wichita, Kansas, noted that weight-loss programs need to be intensive and specific, and participants need to be willing to change their lifestyles dramatically to improve their chances of success.

“People don’t want to give up their comfort foods,” said Early, who was unsurprised by the drop-out rate.

The study findings mirrored those of previous U.S. and European studies, which indicate that current government anti-obesity programs are ineffectual. To combat the growing global obesity epidemic, experts will need to explore ways to increase the retention rates of weight-loss programs, the researchers said.

The study was published on August 1, 2012 in the Canadian Journal of Surgery.
